Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System). This issue affects the function xpmParseColors in the library libXpm of the file parse.c of the component XFree86. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in (1) xpmParseColors in parse.c, (2) ParseAndPutPixels in create.c, and (3) ParsePixels in parse.c for libXpm before 6.8.1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed XPM image file.
The weakness was released 05/04/2005 by Chris Evans with Google Chrome Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0687 since 07/13/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18189 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2005-005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 95006 (Sun Solaris libXpm Multiple Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17414), Tenable (18189), SecurityFocus (BID 11196†), OSVDB (10027†) and Secunia (SA15227†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-1453, VDB-1443, VDB-1452 and VDB-1448. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
