Details
A vulnerability was found in Medtronic Valleylab Exchange Client, Valleylab FT10 Energy Platform and Valleylab FX8 Energy Platform (Medical Device Software) (version now known) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Password Hashing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-328. The product uses an algorithm that produces a digest (output value) that does not meet security expectations for a hash function that allows an adversary to reasonably determine the original input (preimage attack), find another input that can produce the same hash (2nd preimage attack), or find multiple inputs that evaluate to the same hash (birthday attack). Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Medtronic Valleylab Exchange Client version 3.4 and below, Valleylab FT10 Energy Platform (VLFT10GEN) software version 4.0.0 and below, and Valleylab FX8 Energy Platform (VLFX8GEN) software version 1.1.0 and below use the descrypt algorithm for OS password hashing. While interactive, network-based logons are disabled, and attackers can use the other vulnerabilities within this report to obtain local shell access and access these hashes.
The weakness was released 11/08/2019. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-13539 since 07/11/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2019-4994). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-145257. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
