A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component Terminal. The x-man-page: URI handler for Apple Terminal 1.4.4 in Mac OS X 10.3.9 does not cleanse terminal escape sequences, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands.
The bug was discovered 02/21/2005. The weakness was published 05/04/2005 by David Remahl (echo) with Echo One (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3594.
