A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. The setup wizard (ie5setup.exe) for Internet Explorer 5.0 disables (1) the screen saver, which could leave the system open to users with physical access if a failure occurs during an unattended installation, and (2) the Task Scheduler Service, which might prevent the scheduled execution of security-critical programs.
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was presented 03/23/1999 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-1999-1370. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
