The __VIEWSTATE functionality in Microsoft ASP.NET 1.x, when not cryptographically signed, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via deeply nested markup.
The bug was discovered 05/05/2005. The weakness was presented 05/05/2005 by Michal Zalewski (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1665 since 05/18/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at msdn.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative.
