Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Oniguruma up to 6.9.4_rc1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function search_in_range of the file regexec.c. The manipulation as part of a Regular Expression leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An integer overflow in the search_in_range function in regexec.c in Oniguruma 6.x before 6.9.4_rc2 leads to an out-of-bounds read, in which the offset of this read is under the control of an attacker. (This only affects the 32-bit compiled version). Remote attackers can cause a denial-of-service or information disclosure, or possibly have unspecified other impact, via a crafted regular expression.
The weakness was published 11/17/2019. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-19012 since 11/16/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 235934 (RHEL 8 : ruby:2.5 (RHSA-2025:7539)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.9.4_rc2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (235934) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1086). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
