ktsuss up to 1.4 GTK Interface GTK_MODULES input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ktsuss up to 1.4. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component GTK Interface. The manipulation of the argument GTK_MODULES as part of a Environment Variable leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

ktsuss versions 1.4 and prior spawns the GTK interface to run as root. This can allow a local attacker to escalate privileges to root and use the "GTK_MODULES" environment variable to possibly execute arbitrary code.

The bug was discovered 01/27/2012. The weakness was released 11/19/2019 by Yves-Alexis Perez. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2922 since 07/27/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57721 (GLSA-201201-15 : ktsuss: Privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (57721), SecurityFocus (BID 49151†) and OSVDB (78655†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-145950. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
