A vulnerability was found in LightDM up to 0.9.5. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Permission. lightdm before 0.9.6 writes in .dmrc and Xauthority files using root permissions while the files are in user controlled folders. A local user can overwrite root-owned files via a symlink, which can allow possible privilege escalation.
The bug was discovered 08/24/2011. The weakness was released 11/19/2019 by Sebastian Krahmer. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3349 since 08/30/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3009 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 0.9.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
