Details
A vulnerability was found in GnuPG up to 1.4.18/2.0.26/2.1.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the file kbx/keybox-search.c of the component Sign Extension. The manipulation as part of a Keyring File leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
kbx/keybox-search.c in GnuPG before 1.4.19, 2.0.x before 2.0.27, and 2.1.x before 2.1.2 does not properly handle bitwise left-shifts, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid read operation) via a crafted keyring file, related to sign extensions and "memcpy with overlapping ranges."
The bug was discovered 02/14/2015. The weakness was published 11/20/2019 by Hanno Böck. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-1607 since 02/14/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 46 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82526 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 14.10 : gnupg, gnupg2 vulnerabilities (USN-2554-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123825 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 13.6.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.4.19, 2.0.27 or 2.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82526) and SecurityFocus (BID 72610†). Similar entry is available at VDB-145994. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
