Adobe SVG Viewer up to 3.01 PNG memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Adobe SVG Viewer up to 3.01 and classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component PNG Handler. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2004-0597. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Furthermore, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Adobe SVG Viewer up to 3.01. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component PNG Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in libpng 1.2.5 and earlier, as used in multiple products, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed PNG images in which (1) the png_handle_tRNS function does not properly validate the length of transparency chunk (tRNS) data, or the (2) png_handle_sBIT or (3) png_handle_hIST functions do not perform sufficient bounds checking.

The bug was discovered 08/04/2004. The weakness was published 05/05/2005 by Robert Fly (window) with Hyperdose Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at hyperdose.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0597 since 06/23/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at hyperdose.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14559 (GLSA-200408-03 : libpng: Numerous vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90227 (Windows Media Player and Windows Messenger Remote Code Execution (MS05-009)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2673. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2927.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22703), Exploit-DB (389), Tenable (14559), SecurityFocus (BID 10857†) and OSVDB (8326†). Similar entries are available at VDB-779, VDB-1459, VDB-22495 and VDB-22496. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
