Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.3.12 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ext4_empty_dir of the file fs/ext4/namei.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
ext4_empty_dir in fs/ext4/namei.c in the Linux kernel through 5.3.12 allows a NULL pointer dereference because ext4_read_dirblock(inode,0,DIRENT_HTREE) can be zero.
The weakness was disclosed 11/21/2019. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-19037 since 11/17/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
