Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Fotinet FortiOS 5.6/6.0 (Firewall Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component URL/SPAM/AV. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a hard-coded credentials vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-798. The product contains hard-coded credentials, such as a password or cryptographic key, which it uses for its own inbound authentication, outbound communication to external components, or encryption of internal data. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Use of a hardcoded cryptographic key in the FortiGuard services communication protocol may allow a Man in the middle with knowledge of the key to eavesdrop on and modify information (URL/SPAM services in FortiOS 5.6, and URL/SPAM/AV services in FortiOS 6.0.; URL rating in FortiClient) sent and received from Fortiguard severs by decrypting these messages.
The weakness was published 11/21/2019 as FG-IR-18-100 (Website). The advisory is shared at fortiguard.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-9195 since 04/02/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1110.001 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Stefan Viehböck in Python and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at sec-consult.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 6.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at fortiguard.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
