A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD up to 5.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Kernel. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The kernel in FreeBSD 4.x to 4.11 and 5.x to 5.4 does not properly clear certain fixed-length buffers when copying variable-length data for use by applications, which could allow those applications to read previously used sensitive memory.

The bug was discovered 05/06/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/06/2005 by Christian S.J. Peron (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1406 since 05/03/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52667 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS / 8.04 LTS / 9.10 / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 : tiff regression (USN-1085-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115298 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.3 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2005-10-31)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org. A possible mitigation has been published 7 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
