The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. openvas-scanner before 2011-09-11 creates a temporary file insecurely when generating OVAL system characteristics document with the ovaldi integrated tool enabled. A local attacker could use this flaw to conduct symlink attacks to overwrite arbitrary files on the system.

The bug was discovered 09/04/2011. The weakness was released 11/25/2019. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3351 since 08/30/2011. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
