Details
A vulnerability has been found in Ruby up to 1.8.7/1.9.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function WEBrick::HTTPRequest of the component Log File Handler. The manipulation as part of a Request leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Various methods in WEBrick::HTTPRequest in Ruby 1.9.2 and 1.8.7 and earlier do not validate the X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Host and X-Forwarded-Server headers in requests, which might allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary text into log files or bypass intended address parsing via a crafted header.
The bug was discovered 10/07/2011. The weakness was disclosed 11/26/2019. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3624. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2972 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 217462 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2011-3624), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
