Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Ruby up to 2.4.7/2.5.6/2.6.4 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Incomplete Fix. The manipulation as part of a HTTP Response leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Ruby through 2.4.7, 2.5.x through 2.5.6, and 2.6.x through 2.6.4 allows HTTP Response Splitting. If a program using WEBrick inserts untrusted input into the response header, an attacker can exploit it to insert a newline character to split a header, and inject malicious content to deceive clients. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2017-17742, which addressed the CRLF vector, but did not address an isolated CR or an isolated LF.
The weakness was shared 11/26/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ruby-lang.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-16254 since 09/11/2019. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1055.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2023-1110). The entries VDB-146405 and VDB-146400 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
