Ghostscript up to 9.49 setuserparams2 PostScript File incorrect privileged apis

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Ghostscript (Document Processing Software). Affected is the function setuserparams2. The manipulation as part of a PostScript File leads to a incorrect use of privileged apis vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-648. The product does not conform to the API requirements for a function call that requires extra privileges. This could allow attackers to gain privileges by causing the function to be called incorrectly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in all ghostscript versions 9.x before 9.50, in the .setuserparams2 procedure where it did not properly secure its privileged calls, enabling scripts to bypass `-dSAFER` restrictions. A specially crafted PostScript file could disable security protection and then have access to the file system, or execute arbitrary commands.

The weakness was released 11/27/2019 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.ghostscript.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-14812 since 08/10/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240001 (TencentOS Server 3: ghostscript (TSSA-2022:0123)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 9.50 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.ghostscript.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (240001). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-141334. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
