Details
A vulnerability was found in Ruby up to 2.0.0 Patchlevel 644/2.1.5/2.2.1 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function verify_certificate_identity of the component OpenSSL Extension. The manipulation as part of a Certificate leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
verify_certificate_identity in the OpenSSL extension in Ruby before 2.0.0 patchlevel 645, 2.1.x before 2.1.6, and 2.2.x before 2.2.2 does not properly validate hostnames, which allows remote attackers to spoof servers via vectors related to (1) multiple wildcards, (1) wildcards in IDNA names, (3) case sensitivity, and (4) non-ASCII characters.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2015. The weakness was presented 11/29/2019. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1855. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83881 (Amazon Linux AMI : ruby18 (ALAS-2015-529)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.0 Patchlevel 645, 2.1.6 or 2.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (83881). See VDB-75229 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
