A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality in the library MSHTML.DLL of the component File Upload Handler. MSHTML.DLL in Internet Explorer 5.0 allows a remote attacker to paste a file name into the file upload intrinsic control, a variant of "untrusted scripted paste" as described in MS:MS98-013.
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was presented 05/17/1999 as MS99-015 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-0489. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 349 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS99-015 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
