Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 5.0.21/5.3.11 (Operating System). Affected is the function try_merge_free_space of the file fs/btrfs/free-space-cache.c of the component btrfs Filesystem Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel 5.0.21 and 5.3.11, mounting a crafted btrfs filesystem image, performing some operations, and then making a syncfs system call can lead to a use-after-free in try_merge_free_space in fs/btrfs/free-space-cache.c because the pointer to a left data structure can be the same as the pointer to a right data structure.
The weakness was published 12/08/2019. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-19448 since 11/29/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/09/2024).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
