RSA Authentication Agent for Web up to 5.3 on IIS heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in RSA Authentication Agent for Web up to 5.3 on IIS. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in RSA SecurID Web Agent 5, 5.2, and 5.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted chunked-encoding data.

The bug was discovered 02/29/2004. The weakness was presented 05/09/2005 by Gary O'leary-Steele with Sec-1 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1471 since 05/06/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 3 years, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 432 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at knowledge.rsasecurity.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 5695. In this case the pattern /WebID/IISWebAgentIF.dll is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3891.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20444), SecurityFocus (BID 13524†), OSVDB (16164†), Secunia (SA15222†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-9465†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
