Details
A vulnerability was found in mod_wsgi up to 3.3. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Embedded Mode. The manipulation as part of a Content-Type Header leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
mod_wsgi module before 3.4 for Apache, when used in embedded mode, might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via the Content-Type header which is generated from memory that may have been freed and then overwritten by a separate thread.
The bug was discovered 05/21/2014. The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2019 by Buck Golemon. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0242 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76246 (Scientific Linux Security Update : mod_wsgi on SL6.x i386/srpm/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350768 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for mod_wsgi: AL2012-2015-063).
Upgrading to version 3.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39196), Tenable (76246) and SecurityFocus (BID 67534†). The entry VDB-13299 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
