A vulnerability has been found in Squid Proxy up to 2.5.STABLE9 (Firewall Software) and classified as problematic. Squid 2.5 STABLE9 and earlier, when the DNS client port is unfiltered and the environment does not prevent IP spoofing, allows remote attackers to spoof DNS lookups.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2005. The weakness was released 05/11/2005 with Squid Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at squid-cache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11803.
