A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). This issue affects an unknown part of the component Security Level 1 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. BSD 4.4 based operating systems, when running at security level 1, allow the root user to clear the immutable and append-only flags for files by unmounting the file system and using a file system editor such as fsdb to directly modify the file through a device.
The weakness was disclosed 07/02/1999 by FIRST as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1394. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
