Details
A vulnerability was found in Envoy up to 1.12.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Route Manager. The manipulation of the argument Host as part of a HTTP Request leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in Envoy 1.12.0. Upon receipt of a malformed HTTP request without a Host header, it sends an internally generated "Invalid request" response. This internally generated response is dispatched through the configured encoder filter chain before being sent to the client. An encoder filter that invokes route manager APIs that access a request's Host header causes a NULL pointer dereference, resulting in abnormal termination of the Envoy process.
The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2019 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-18838 since 11/08/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
