A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft IIS 3.0 (Web Server). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component SSL ISAPI Filter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in the SSL ISAPI filter in IIS and other servers may leak information in plaintext.
The issue has been introduced in 05/15/1997. The weakness was released 08/11/1999 with Microsoft as MS99-053 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0861. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 818 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying the patch MS99-053 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
