Linux Kernel up to 5.1.5 Error cfg80211.c mwifiex_tm_cmd release of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.1.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function mwifiex_tm_cmd of the file drivers/net/wireless/marvell/mwifiex/cfg80211.c of the component Error Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a release of resource vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-772. The product does not release a resource after its effective lifetime has ended, i.e., after the resource is no longer needed. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

mwifiex_tm_cmd in drivers/net/wireless/marvell/mwifiex/cfg80211.c in the Linux kernel before 5.1.6 has some error-handling cases that did not free allocated hostcmd memory, aka CID-003b686ace82. This will cause a memory leak and denial of service.

The weakness was published 12/30/2019. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-20095 since 12/30/2019. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208557 (CentOS 7 : kernel-alt (RHSA-2020:1493)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.1.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (208557). Similar entry is available at VDB-147876. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
