GNU FreeRADIUS 1.0.2 rlm_sql.c sql_escape_func memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU FreeRADIUS 1.0.2 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sql_escape_func of the file rlm_sql.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the sql_escape_func function in the SQL module for FreeRADIUS 1.0.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash).

The bug was discovered 05/06/2005. The weakness was presented 05/17/2005 by Primoz Bratanic (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1455 since 05/05/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58863 (Fedora 17 : systemd-44-6.fc17 (2012-6456)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117921 (CentOS Security Update for FreeRADIUS (CESA-2005:524)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.freeradius.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 8 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20450), Tenable (58863), SecurityFocus (BID 13541†), OSVDB (16456†) and Secunia (SA15361†).
