Red Hat Linux up to 6.0 Automounter Daemon memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Red Hat Linux 4.2/5.0/5.1/5.2/6.0 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Automounter Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in Berkeley automounter daemon (amd) logging facility provided in the Linux am-utils package and others.

The issue has been introduced in 05/19/1997. The weakness was disclosed 09/16/1999 with Redhat (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-1999-0704. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 850 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10211 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 66012 (AMD Daemon Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 576. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 617.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (3171), Exploit-DB (19478), Tenable (10211), SecurityFocus (BID 614†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
