Linux Kernel up to 5.4 KVM Hypervisor /dev/kvm out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4. This affects an unknown part of the file /dev/kvm of the component KVM Hypervisor. Executing a manipulation can lead to out-of-bounds write. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2019-19332. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file /dev/kvm of the component KVM Hypervisor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

An out-of-bounds memory write issue was found in the Linux Kernel, version 3.13 through 5.4, in the way the Linux kernel's KVM hypervisor handled the 'KVM_GET_EMULATED_CPUID' ioctl(2) request to get CPUID features emulated by the KVM hypervisor. A user or process able to access the '/dev/kvm' device could use this flaw to crash the system, resulting in a denial of service.

The weakness was published 01/09/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-19332 since 11/27/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/09/2020).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
