Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OSSEC-HIDS up to 3.5.0. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Log Server. The manipulation as part of a syscheck Message leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In OSSEC-HIDS 2.7 through 3.5.0, the server component responsible for log analysis (ossec-analysisd) is vulnerable to path traversal (with write access) via crafted syscheck messages written directly to the analysisd UNIX domain socket by a local user.
The weakness was released 01/30/2020. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-8446. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
