Linux Kernel KVM Hypervisor Memory race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel. It has been rated as problematic. This affects an unknown function of the component KVM Hypervisor. The manipulation leads to race condition (Memory). This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-3016. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component KVM Hypervisor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In a Linux KVM guest that has PV TLB enabled, a process in the guest kernel may be able to read memory locations from another process in the same guest. This problem is limit to the host running linux kernel 4.10 with a guest running linux kernel 4.16 or later. The problem mainly affects AMD processors but Intel CPUs cannot be ruled out.

The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2020 as Bug 1792167 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-3016. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
