A vulnerability was found in Squid Web Proxy up to 4.9 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ext_lm_group_acl of the component NTLM Authentication. The manipulation as part of a Credentials leads to a input validation vulnerability. An issue was discovered in Squid before 4.10. Due to incorrect input validation, the NTLM authentication credentials parser in ext_lm_group_acl may write to memory outside the credentials buffer. On systems with memory access protections, this can result in the helper process being terminated unexpectedly. This leads to the Squid process also terminating and a denial of service for all clients using the proxy.
The weakness was released 02/04/2020. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-8517 since 02/02/2020. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 4.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
