Cisco Video Surveillance 8000 Series IP Camera up to 1.0.6 Discovery Protocol input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Cisco Video Surveillance 8000 Series IP Camera up to 1.0.6. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component Discovery Protocol. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2020-3110. The attacker needs to be present on the local network. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco Video Surveillance 8000 Series IP Camera up to 1.0.6 (Video Surveillance Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Discovery Protocol. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in the Cisco Discovery Protocol implementation for the Cisco Video Surveillance 8000 Series IP Cameras could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to execute code remotely or cause a reload of an affected IP Camera. The vulnerability is due to missing checks when processing Cisco Discovery Protocol messages. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malicious Cisco Discovery Protocol packet to the targeted IP Camera. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to expose the affected IP Camera for remote code execution or cause it to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. Cisco Discovery Protocol is a Layer 2 protocol. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be in the same broadcast domain as the affected device (Layer 2 adjacent). This vulnerability is fixed in Video Surveillance 8000 Series IP Camera Firmware Release 1.0.7 and later.

The weakness was presented 02/05/2020 as cisco-sa-20200205-ipcameras-rc as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-3110 since 12/12/2019. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability is due to missing checks when processing Cisco Discovery Protocol messages. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malicious Cisco Discovery Protocol packet to the targeted IP Camera. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to expose the affected IP Camera for remote code execution or cause it to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Upgrading to version 1.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
