A vulnerability has been found in Apport (affected version not known) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Configuration File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. Kevin Backhouse discovered that apport would read a user-supplied configuration file with elevated privileges. By replacing the file with a symbolic link, a user could get apport to read any file on the system as root, with unknown consequences.
The weakness was shared 02/08/2020. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-11481 since 04/23/2019. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
