A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Windows 98/NT 4.0/2000 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Wordpad. The manipulation as part of a RTF Document File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Rich Text Format (RTF) reader allows attackers to cause a denial of service via a malformed control word.
The issue has been introduced in 08/24/1996. The weakness was released 11/17/1999 by Pauli Ojanpera as MS00-005 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0073. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1180 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90148 (Microsoft Malformed RTF Control Word Vulnerability (MS00-005)).
Applying the patch MS00-005 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
