runc up to 1.0.0-rc9 Access Control rootfs_linux.go name resolution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in runc up to 1.0.0-rc9. Affected is an unknown part of the file libcontainer/rootfs_linux.go of the component Access Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a name resolution vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-706. The product uses a name or reference to access a resource, but the name/reference resolves to a resource that is outside of the intended control sphere. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

runc through 1.0.0-rc9 has Incorrect Access Control leading to Escalation of Privileges, related to libcontainer/rootfs_linux.go. To exploit this, an attacker must be able to spawn two containers with custom volume-mount configurations, and be able to run custom images. (This vulnerability does not affect Docker due to an implementation detail that happens to block the attack.)

The weakness was presented 02/12/2020. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-19921 since 12/22/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
