Sun Solaris 2.5.1/2.6/7.0 chkperm VMSYS symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Sun Solaris 2.5.1/2.6/7.0 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file chkperm. The manipulation of the argument VMSYS as part of a Environment Variable leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Solaris chkperm allows local users to read files owned by bin via the VMSYS environmental variable and a symlink attack.

The weakness was presented 12/01/1999 by Brock Tellier (FIRST) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0860. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (19235) and SecurityFocus (BID 837†). See VDB-15022 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
