Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.5.6 on AArch64 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component GNU C Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel 5.4 and 5.5 through 5.5.6 on the AArch64 architecture. It ignores the top byte in the address passed to the brk system call, potentially moving the memory break downwards when the application expects it to move upwards, aka CID-dcde237319e6. This has been observed to cause heap corruption with the GNU C Library malloc implementation.
The weakness was presented 02/25/2020. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2020-9391 since 02/25/2020. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/26/2020).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
