A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise 5.2/5.5 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the file gwweb.exe. The manipulation of the argument HELP with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Groupwise web server GWWEB.EXE allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files with .htm extensions via a .. (dot dot) attack using the HELP parameter.
The weakness was released 12/19/1999 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1005.
