A vulnerability was found in University of Washington wu-ftpd 2.4.2/2.5.0/2.6.0 (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component FTP Conversion. The manipulation as part of a Filename leads to a privileges management vulnerability. wu-ftp with FTP conversion enabled allows an attacker to execute commands via a malformed file name that is interpreted as an argument to the program that does the conversion, e.g. tar or uncompress.
The weakness was presented 12/20/1999 by suid as DSA-377 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-0997. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
