A vulnerability has been found in Allaire ColdFusion Server up to 4.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file openfile.cfm. The Expression Evaluator in the ColdFusion Application Server allows a remote attacker to upload files to the server via openfile.cfm, which does not restrict access to the server properly.
The weakness was disclosed 12/25/1999 with L0pht (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-0477. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:openfile.cfm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10001 (ColdFusion Multiple Vulnerabilities (File Upload/Manipulation)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10045 (Allaire Macromedia ColdFusion Remote File Display, Deletion, Upload and Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 4.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 918. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 428.
