Details
A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Ansible up to 2.7.17/2.8.9/2.9.6 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function Extract-Zip of the component win_unzip. The manipulation as part of a Archive leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in Ansible 2.7.17 and prior, 2.8.9 and prior, and 2.9.6 and prior when using the Extract-Zip function from the win_unzip module as the extracted file(s) are not checked if they belong to the destination folder. An attacker could take advantage of this flaw by crafting an archive anywhere in the file system, using a path traversal. This issue is fixed in 2.10.
The weakness was shared 03/09/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-1737 since 11/27/2019. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/17/2025). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
