A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in AltaVista Search Intranet 2.0b/2.3a. This issue affects an unknown function of the file query.cgi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. AltaVista search engine allows remote attackers to read files above the document root via a .. (dot dot) in the query.cgi CGI program.
The weakness was presented 12/29/1999 by rudi carell (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0039. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
