A vulnerability was found in NetHack up to 3.5.x and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Configuration File. NetHack before version 3.6.0 allowed malicious use of escaping of characters in the configuration file (usually .nethackrc) which could be exploited. This bug is patched in NetHack 3.6.0.
The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-5253 since 01/02/2020. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 3.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
