Details
A vulnerability was found in rubygem up to 0.12.x (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Dashboard. The manipulation of the argument direction with an unknown input leads to a data query logic injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-943. The product generates a query intended to access or manipulate data in a data store such as a database, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that can modify the intended logic of the query. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In Administrate (rubygem) before version 0.13.0, when sorting by attributes on a dashboard, the direction parameter was not validated before being interpolated into the SQL query. This could present a SQL injection if the attacker were able to modify the `direction` parameter and bypass ActiveRecord SQL protections. Whilst this does have a high-impact, to exploit this you need access to the Administrate dashboards, which we would expect to be behind authentication. This is patched in wersion 0.13.0.
The weakness was disclosed 03/13/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-5257 since 01/02/2020. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 0.13.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
