Rockwell Automation MicroLogix 1100/MicroLogix 1400/RSLogix 500 client-side authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Rockwell Automation MicroLogix 1100, MicroLogix 1400 and RSLogix 500 (Automation Software) (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use of client-side authentication vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-603. A client/server product performs authentication within client code but not in server code, allowing server-side authentication to be bypassed via a modified client that omits the authentication check. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Rockwell Automation MicroLogix 1400 Controllers Series B v21.001 and prior, Series A, all versions, MicroLogix 1100 Controller, all versions, RSLogix 500 Software v12.001 and prior, A remote, unauthenticated attacker can send a request from the RSLogix 500 software to the victim’s MicroLogix controller. The controller will then respond to the client with used password values to authenticate the user on the client-side. This method of authentication may allow an attacker to bypass authentication altogether, disclose sensitive information, or leak credentials.

The weakness was disclosed 03/16/2020. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-6988 since 01/14/2020. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
