Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in newlib up to 3.2.x. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library newlib/libc/include/sys/reent.h) of the component Debug Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The REENT_CHECK macro (see newlib/libc/include/sys/reent.h) as used by REENT_CHECK_TM, REENT_CHECK_MISC, REENT_CHECK_MP and other newlib macros in verisons prior to 3.3.0, does not check for memory allocation problems when the DEBUG flag is unset (as is the case in production firmware builds).
The weakness was shared 03/18/2020 (Website). The advisory is available at census-labs.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-14871 since 08/10/2019. The attack may be launched remotely.
