Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Sun Solaris 2.4/2.5.1 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component nlps_server. The manipulation with the input value NLPS:002:002: leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in nlps_server in Sun Solaris x86 2.4, 2.5, and 2.5.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code as root via a long string beginning with "NLPS:002:002:" to the listen (aka System V listener) port, TCP port 2766.
The weakness was presented 12/31/1999 as not defined exploit (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1588 since 04/21/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/20/2026). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling tcp/2766. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 300.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (20602) and SecurityFocus (BID 2319†). See VDB-15201 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
