Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Red Hat Ansible Engine up to 2.7.16/2.8.9/2.9.5. Affected is an unknown code of the component Fact Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a unnecessary privileges vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-250. The product performs an operation at a privilege level that is higher than the minimum level required, which creates new weaknesses or amplifies the consequences of other weaknesses. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in Ansible Engine, all versions 2.7.x, 2.8.x and 2.9.x prior to 2.7.17, 2.8.9 and 2.9.6 respectively, when using ansible_facts as a subkey of itself and promoting it to a variable when inject is enabled, overwriting the ansible_facts after the clean. An attacker could take advantage of this by altering the ansible_facts, such as ansible_hosts, users and any other key data which would lead into privilege escalation or code injection.

The weakness was shared 03/24/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-10684 since 03/20/2020. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 246412 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2020-10684), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
